With just 11 days remaining until the House of Representatives elections, the Election Commission has intensified its nationwide voter education programme.
The commission said it has deployed one voter education volunteer in each of the 6,743 wards across 753 local levels from February 15 to March 1.
Nepal is scheduled to vote on March 5 to elect the 275-member lower house of the Federal Parliament. Of the total seats, 165 will be filled under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system and 110 through proportional representation.
According to the commission, the volunteers are conducting door-to-door visits and informing households about the voting process using sample ballot papers. A focal person has also been appointed at the local level to monitor the voter education campaign.
The commission said it is taking measures to curb the spread of false and misleading information as well as hate speech.
In this regard, 290 content creators and communicators involved in producing and disseminating harmful information have been reported to the Cyber Bureau of the Nepal Police. Similarly, 11 individuals have been recommended for action to the Nepal Telecommunication Authority.
In addition, 65 individuals have been recommended to the Press Council Nepal for action under the Press Council Act, 2048, while one case has been forwarded under the Advertisement (Regulation) Act, 2076, the commission said.
