HoR Polls: Only Seven Women in Winners’ List so far

Of the candidates declared winners in Thursday’s House of Representatives election so far, only seven are women.

Six of them are from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and one from the Nepali Congress.

Among the RSP winners, Ranju Neupane secured victory from Kathmandu-1 with 15,455 votes, Rubina Acharya from Morang-6 with 55,513 votes, Bina Gurung from Kaski-3 with 37,750 votes, Komal Gnyawali from Kailali-1 with 17,826 votes, Sobita Gautam from Chitwan-3 with 59,277 votes, and Neetima Bhandari Karki from Sarlahi-1 with 44,181 votes.

Nepali Congress candidate Basana Thapa won from Dailekh-1 with 12,372 votes.

So far, the Election Commission has declared results in 64 constituencies. The RSP has won 53 seats and is leading in 67. The Nepali Congress has won seven seats and is leading in 10, while the CPN (UML) has won two and is leading in 10 constituencies.

The Nepali Communist Party has secured one seat and is leading in six constituencies. Independent candidate Mahabir Pun has won in Myagdi.

Meanwhile, the Shram Sanskriti Party is leading in three constituencies, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party is leading in one.

Among women candidates, RSP’s Dr Tosima Karki (Lalitpur-3), Indira Ranamagar (Jhapa-2), Nisha Dangi (Jhapa-1), Ashika Tamang (Dhading-1), Pushpa Kumari Chaudhary (Saptari-1) and Gauri Kumari (Mahottari-4) are currently leading.

Of the 3,406 candidates contesting under the first-past-the-post system, 388 were women.
