The Harkaraj Rai-led Shram Sanskriti Party has secured three first-past-the-post (FPTP) seats in Nepal’s House of Representatives election.
Rai, former Mayor of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, won Sunsari-1 with 35,741 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Goma Tamang of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), who received 27,249 votes.
In Khotang-1, 29-year-old Aren Rai, also the party’s general secretary, emerged victorious with 16,612 votes, beating CPN (UML)’s Dev Bikram Rai by 3,898 votes. Dev Bikram secured 12,714 votes.
Dhruba Raj Rai won Bhojpur-1 with 16,663 votes, narrowly defeating CPN (UML)’s Sherdhan Rai, who received 14,750 votes.
The party has also secured 107,032 proportional representation (PR) votes so far, equivalent to 2.36 percent of the 4.53 million votes counted. Under Nepal’s election system, a party must win at least one FPTP seat and secure a minimum of 3 percent of the valid PR votes to be recognised as a national party.
Nepal voted last Thursday to elect the 275-member House of Representatives, the lower house of the Federal Parliament. Of the total seats, 165 are elected through FPTP, while 110 are allocated via proportional representation.
