While political parties are busy finalising proportional representation (PR) candidates following the announcement of the final results of the March 5 House of Representatives elections, the new parliament building under construction within the Singha Durbar premises remains incomplete.

Of the 110 PR seats, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured 57, Nepali Congress 20, CPN (UML) 16, Nepali Communist Party nine, and Shram Sanskriti and Rastriya Prajatantra Party four each.

Under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, RSP won 125 seats, Nepali Congress 18, CPN (UML) nine, Nepali Communist Party eight, Shram Sanskriti three, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party one.

Independent candidate Mahabir Pun won the Myagdi constituency.

Of 275, RSP will have 182 lawmakers, just two short of a two-thirds majority.

According to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, preparations are underway to convene a session of the Lower House in the new building. However, officials say the main assembly hall is unlikely to be ready on time. Alternative arrangements are being planned.

In coordination with the Ministry of Urban Development and contractors, a multipurpose hall will be temporarily used to administer the oath to newly elected lawmakers.

The International Convention Centre in New Baneshwar which served as Federal Parliament building was vandalised and set on fire during the Gen Z-led demonstration on September 9, 2025.
