December 18: The government is preparing to stop public vehicles which are more than two decades old to operate on the roads of the country. From the start of the coming Nepali New Year, the movement of such vehicles will be banned by the Department of Transport Management (DoTM).
If the government succeeds in implementing this rule, then a total of 10,000 vehicles will not be able to ply the roads. The department will not give route permit to such vehicles, and if found running on the road, it will take action against such vehicles. As per the current provision, public vehicles should renew the route permit in every four months.
The government believes that doing this will stop the sale of old vehicles. Spokesperson of DoTM Dr Tokraj Pandey said that stopping the movement of these vehicles will stop road accidents and reduce air pollution.
The government has already stopped the vehicular movement of vehicles older than 20 years in the Kathmandu Valley. After such move, those vehicles started to run in different rural areas of the country. Meanwhile, this provision is not applicable for electric tempos and micro buses.
