January 7: Reconstruction of roads damaged by the earthquakes of 2015 is taking place at snail’s pace. A total of 1061.64 kilometres of road was damaged by the devastating quakes about two and a half years ago. Out of the total damaged road, only 7-km road section of Bhaktapur to Telkot is likely to be repaired soon.
It is one of the 17 road sections being rebuilt with the loan assistance from Asian Development Bank. The bank has provided loan to rebuild a total of 307 kilometres of road.
According to the Earthquake Emergency Assistance Project (EEAP) under the Department of Local Infrastructure and Development of Agricultural Roads (DOLIDAR), the repair works of Bhaktapur-Telkot road section will be complete within a month. After the completion of the road section, the project will carry out the repair of the remaining 31 road sections which stretches over 753.89 kilometres.
The project came into existence after the ADB approved Rs 4 billion loan about a year ago to rebuild roads and bridges destroyed by the earthquakes.
