April 6: The end of syndicate system in transport sector will be beneficial not only for the public but also for the government. The government can collect huge amount of revenue if it becomes able to bring more than 200,000 public vehicles under company. According to the statistics of the Department of Transport Management (DoTM), only 113 registered public vehicles are paying tax. However, the number of public vehicles in the country is more than 200,000. The government is losing millions of rupees annually for not registering the vehicles under Companies Act, 2063.
The existing system of obtaining route permit on the recommendation of transport committees has made it easy for transport entrepreneurs to evade tax.
Since company registration for public vehicles is not compulsory, and the government authorities neglect tax collection, the state coffers has been losing a lot of revenue.
