The curfew imposed in Birgunj since Saturday evening, following violent clashes during a religious procession, has been extended until midnight on Sunday.
Authorities initially enforced the curfew from 6:30 PM on Saturday, April 12, to 12:00 PM on Sunday, April 13, after tensions flared during a Hanuman Jayanti procession. The violence reportedly erupted in the evening when unidentified individuals pelted stones at the procession, injuring both participants and security personnel.
In a notice issued on Sunday afternoon, the District Administration Office in Parsa announced that the curfew would be extended until 12:00 AM on Monday to maintain public order.
The curfew prohibits all forms of movement, gatherings, rallies, and assemblies within the designated area bounded by Bypass Road to the east, Sirsiya Bridge to the west, Power House Chowk to the north, and Shankaracharya Gate to the south.
More than a dozen security personnel—including Nepal Police and Armed Police Force officials—were injured in the stone-throwing incident. Superintendent of Police Gautam Mishra was among those hurt.
The unrest reportedly began in the Chhapkaiya area, where stones were hurled at the religious procession. In response, security forces deployed multiple rounds of tear gas and fired two live rounds into the air as warning shots. Water cannons were also used to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Several shops and properties in Chhapkaiya were vandalized amid the chaos. Police also confirmed that a motorcycle parked in a garage was set ablaze.
