The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has issued a special bulletin warning of potential heatwave in the Terai region over the next two days and urged the public to take necessary precautions.
According to the Weather Forecasting Division under the DHM, extreme temperatures—exceeding 40°C—have been recorded in parts of Lumbini Province, while temperatures above 38°C have been observed across several areas of Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim provinces in recent days.
"There is a likelihood of extreme heat in many parts of the Terai, including Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim provinces for the next two days," the department said in the special bulletin issued on Wednesday. "Residents are advised to prepare accordingly and adopt protective measures to minimize health risks."
Potential Health Risks
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and heatwaves can cause fatigue, dehydration, excessive thirst, headache, leg cramps, dizziness, fainting, muscle pain, and vomiting, among other symptoms.
To minimize the risks associated with extreme heat and hot winds, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued several safety recommendations.
People are advised to remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day and to stay in cool or shaded areas as much as possible. Avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities, especially under direct sunlight, can help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, reads the advisory.
The department also recommends wearing light, loose-fitting clothing made of cotton and covering the head with a hat or scarf when going outside.
Staying hydrated is crucial. Individuals should drink plenty of fluids regularly, such as water, juice, or other refreshing beverages, even if they do not feel thirsty.
In case of any health issues caused by the heat, it is important to seek medical attention promptly and stay in regular contact with healthcare providers for further guidance, added the DHM.
The department said it will continue to update its daily weather bulletin and urged the public to stay informed through official forecasts. -- RSS
