Disaster-related incidents claimed 745 lives across the country in the year 2081 BS, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). A total of 8,861 disaster-related incidents were recorded during this period.
In these incidents, 69 people went missing and 1,702 sustained injuries, said NDRRMA spokesperson Ram Bahadur KC. The disasters affected 18,991 households, while property worth Rs 3.13 billion was damaged.
The Authority reported that the highest number of fatalities—351—occurred due to landslides, followed by 97 deaths from floods, 78 from lightning strikes, and 77 from fire incidents. Other causes of death included heavy rainfall (8), wildlife attacks (43), altitude sickness (24), air crashes (23), snakebites (19), forest fires (10), storms (7), a boat capsize (1), and other causes (7).
Among the missing, 48 were due to landslides, 18 to floods, and 3 to avalanches.
In terms of frequency, fire incidents were the most common disaster recorded this year. Between April 12, 2024, and April 11, 2025 (corresponding to 2081 BS), 4,145 fire incidents occurred, followed by 1,195 forest fires and 1,005 landslides.
The Authority also recorded 418 flood-related incidents, 568 incidents caused by heavy rainfall, 418 lightning incidents, and 477 wildlife attacks. Other disasters included 111 cases of altitude sickness, two air crashes, 84 snakebite incidents, 349 storm events, one boat capsize, six avalanches, 74 earthquakes, one hailstorm, and seven other disaster-related incidents. -- RSS
