The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police on Tuesday, October 1, released Durga Prasai on bail.
Prasai, the Executive Director of the Jhapa-based B & C Medical College who has been mired in controversies in recent years, was arrested on September 22 for an alleged cyber crime case from his residence in Bhaktapur.
Prasai paid a bail amount of Rs 100,000, with Rs 50,000 set for each of the two separate complaints lodged against him under the Electronic Transactions Act.
SSP Dan Bahadur Karki, the Central Spokesperson for Nepal Police, told NBA that Prasai was released as per the court's directives after he paid the bail amount.
A single bench of justice Thakur Prasad Kharel of the Kathmandu District Court on Tuesday directed to release Prasai on bail.
Earlier, the court remanded him to custody for three days, in accordance with Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act. Subsequently, on September 25, the court granted a five-day extension to his custody.
The controversies surrounding Prasai include campaigning against the repayment of bank loans and harassing senior bank employees among others.
Dr Govinda KC’s countless hunger strikes against the government’s attempts to grant affiliation to Prasai’s college to run the MBBS programme also kept him in the spotlight.
