March 2025 has electrified Nepal’s electric vehicle (EV) scene with the high-profile launches of the S5 from China’s MG Motors and Creta Electric from South Korea’s Hyundai. These new launches have ignited fresh enthusiasm in a market already buzzing from recent launches of Deepal E07 in January and Tata Curvv.ev in February.
MG S5 EV
On March 6, MG Motors, the renowned Chinese automobile brand, unveiled its much-anticipated electric SUV, the MG S5, in Nepal, making it the first country outside China to introduce this model. The unveiling took place at a special ceremony hosted by Paramount Motors, the official distributor of MG vehicles in Nepal, in Kathmandu.
The MG S5 builds on the success of the highly popular MG ZS EV, which has sold over 2,500 units in the country, cementing MG’s six-year presence in Nepal’s growing market. Paramount Motors has said that the introduction of the MG S5 marks a significant step in the evolution of EVs in the Nepali market.
Speaking at the launch event, Sunil B Chhetri, General Manager of Paramount Motors, praised the S5’s cutting-edge technology and innovation. “The MG S5 EV reflects our commitment to advancing electric mobility with innovation, safety and driving pleasure,” he said. “With its next-gen technology and segment-leading features, we believe the S5 will redefine EV mobility in Nepal.”
Features and Pricing
A standout feature of the MG S5 is its exceptionally thin battery pack, which is the thinnest ever seen in Nepal, measuring only 110mm in thickness. The MG S5 EV comes in three variants: Comfort, Deluxe, and Luxury.
● Comfort Variant: Priced at Rs 4,399,000, it features a 49.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery along with a 99 kW electric motor.
● Deluxe Variant: Priced at Rs. 4,999,000, this variant shares the same battery size and motor power as the Comfort but comes with additional features.
● Luxury Variant: Available for Rs 5,499,000, it features a larger 62.2 kWh LFP battery, offering an extended driving range, while maintaining the same 99 kW motor.
All variants of the S5 offer a ground clearance of 180 mm. Bookings are currently underway, with deliveries set to commence on April 1.
According to the company, the S5 combines modern design with advanced technology. Its exterior boasts a sleek, stylish look, while the interior features premium materials and spacious comfort. The SUV boasts a 12.8-inch central control screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, providing real-time data, navigation and multimedia options. Wireless charging is also available, and the car supports popular apps like YouTube, Spotify and TikTok for a connected driving experience.
Performance and Safety
The MG S5 EV offers excellent efficiency and power. The 49.1 kWh battery provides a range of up to 350 km on a full charge, while the 62.2 kWh battery extends the range to 450 km, making it suitable for both daily commuting and long drives, Paramount Motors said in a statement. “Additionally, the vehicle supports fast charging, allowing for an 80% charge in just 40 minutes,” it added.
Inside, the MG S5 offers a premium driving experience. The cabin features options like leather upholstery and ambient lighting, with ample space for passengers and luggage. The vehicle’s efficient electric motor ensures smooth acceleration and top-tier performance on the road, with a top speed ideal for highway driving.
Safety is a key priority in the MG S5 EV. The vehicle is equipped with multiple airbags, ABS, EBD and advanced driver assistance systems to ensure the safety of all passengers. Its reinforced body structure and collision protection features contribute to its high safety ratings, giving drivers and passengers peace of mind.
Hyundai Creta EV
Hyundai launched its eagerly awaited Creta Electric in the Nepali market on March 24, following its global debut at the Bharat Mobility Expo in January.
Dipak Thapaliya, General Manager of Laxmi Intercontinental, Hyundai's official distributor in Nepal, said they were thrilled and confident about the Creta Electric’s potential in the Nepali market.
Features and Battery Options
The Creta Electric comes with two battery options:
● 51.4 kWh Pack: Delivering 168 bhp with a range of 473 km.
● 42 kWh Pack: Generating 132 bhp with a range of 390 km.
The car boasts rapid acceleration, hitting 0-100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds. It is equipped with a battery heater to optimize performance in various climates. Charging is quick and convenient, with the 11 kW smart wall box charger enabling a full charge in just four hours, while DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in just 58 minutes.
Safety and Technology
Safety is paramount in the Creta Electric as the SUV comes with over 72 safety features, including six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes and an electronic parking brake. It also offers Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Level 2, with Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning and Smart Cruise Control. Regenerative braking with i-Pedal technology ensures smooth deceleration, and the vehicle’s structure - 75% Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) and High Strength Steel (HSS) -enhances durability.
Inside, the Creta Electric elevates the driving experience with dual 10.25-inch curved displays for infotainment and instrumentation, paired with a Bose 8-speaker sound system. Hyundai’s Bluelink connectivity suite provides over 70 smart features, such as remote vehicle monitoring and enhanced security. Additional comforts include ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control and a voice-activated panoramic sunroof.
Practicality and Convenience
The addition of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality boosts practicality, enabling users to power external devices with the help of the car’s battery. Additionally, the Creta Electric features a digital key, accessible through smartphones and smartwatches, providing effortless and convenient access.
