A fire triggered by a cooking gas cylinder leak in Halesi, Khotang, destroyed properties worth more than Rs 70.3 million on Sunday, February 16.
The blaze started around 7 PM in the kitchen of Padam Shumsher Rai’s home in Mahadevsthan, Halesi Tuwachung Municipality-7, and quickly spread, gutting four houses, three hotels, a hardware shop, and a microfinance office. It took four hours for local residents and security forces to bring the fire under control, according to Acting Chief District Officer Hiradhan Rai.
While no casualties were reported, the damage has been significant, said the municipality’s spokesperson Kamal Giri. “We are coordinating with various agencies to ensure compensation for the affected families through a one-door policy for aid distribution,” he added.
Inspector Hemant Rai of the Halesi Police Office stated that water scarcity exacerbated the situation, as the area is typically dry. “The lack of fire-fighting resources at the local level led to the massive property loss,” he said.
