Amid growing calls to improve the quality of education in Nepal’s universities to retain students within the country, the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has reported a significant outflow of funds for study abroad, the state-run national news agency RSS reported.
According to the central bank’s latest report, Nepal spent Rs 64.15 billion on foreign education in the first seven months of the current fiscal year.
The Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation Report released by the NRB on Monday states that the country’s total travel-related expenses under the service account increased by 10.6 percent to Rs 115.88 billion during the review period, with education accounting for more than half of this amount.
In the same period last year, Nepal’s spending on foreign education stood at Rs 66.64 billion.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s earnings from travel-related services—primarily tourism—grew by 7.7 percent, reaching Rs 49.21 billion in the review period, up from Rs 45.68 billion in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. Despite this increase, the country’s spending on foreign education alone exceeded its total tourism earnings by Rs 14.94 billion.
As a result, Nepal’s net services income registered a deficit of Rs 50.22 billion in the review period, a sharp increase from the Rs 36.38 billion deficit recorded in the same period last year. (With inputs from RSS)
