The government on Monday, January 6, announced an increase in fares for public transport and cargo carriers operating on inter-province routes, effective immediately.
According to the Department of Transport Management (DoTM), passenger vehicle fares have been raised by 3.3 percent, while cargo carrier fares have increased by 0.81 percent for hilly roads and 0.05 percent for Tarai roads.
The fare adjustment was made considering transport workers’ wages, operating expenses and profits, interest rates and fuel prices among other factors, the DoTM stated in its notice .
Under the revised fares, a trip on the Kathmandu–Attariya–Martadi (Bajura) route, the longest at 944.6 kilometers, will now cost Rs 3,132 in normal passenger vehicles, up from Rs 3,032. Deluxe and super deluxe vehicles will charge Rs 3,759 and Rs 4,510, respectively.
The last fare adjustment occurred in mid-August 2023 under the automatic pricing mechanism, which permits fare changes when petroleum prices fluctuate by 5 percent or more.
