The government is planning to introduce a new law for land acquisition replacing the existing Land Acquision Act-1977 with the objective to avoid the hassles being faced in acquiring land for development projects.
Â
Â
The major points to be changed are related to the compensation and environmental management. The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has already held discussions with the authorities and ministries concerned. Finance Secretary Rameshwor Khanal said, “A new act is being formulated as there were difficulties in acquiring land for development projects under the existing one.â€
Â
Â
The Ministry of Law and Justice (MLJ) and Nepal Law Commission (NLC) have started reforming the law.
Â
Â
Khanal added, “If such issues are not addressed timely, we will be unable to commence any project.â€
Â
Â
Ramesh Dhakal, a Joint Secretary at NLC said the new act would ensure easy and simple procedure for land acquisition. “It would also ensure the right amount of compensation,†he added. There is no provision of the compensation in the existing act.
