The International Balloon Festival in Pokhara has breathed new life into the city’s tourism market, attracting a surge of domestic and international visitors.
The nine-day festival, which began on December 24 on the shore of Fewa Lake, coincides with the Christmas and New Year 2025 celebrations. Organized by Balloon Nepal, the event aims to promote tourism through adventure sports, according to its chairman, Bikram Bade.
“We are thrilled by the participation of both local and international visitors,” Bade said, highlighting the festival's initial success.
The event features a range of attractions, including sunrise and sunset views, night balloon glows, fireworks, and balloon races. Hot air balloon flights offering panoramic vistas of Pokhara Valley, the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre mountain ranges, and cultural performances such as the Kumari Dance and Bajrayogini are drawing significant attention.
The festival aligns with Pokhara Metropolitan City’s initiative to mark 2025 as Pokhara Visit Year, aiming to further boost tourism in the region. Hot air balloon pilots from 15 countries are participating, with 17 colorful balloons of various types and sizes adorning the skies over Pokhara.
Balloon Nepal has been offering commercial balloon flights in Pokhara since 2017, establishing the city as a hub for adventure tourism. This festival is expected to enhance Pokhara’s appeal as a premier tourist destination. -- RSS
