Import of motorcycles via Birgunj Customs, the major transit point in the country, doubled in the first month of the current fiscal year compared to the corresponding period last fiscal year.
But, the imports of jeeps and cars decreased by 40% in the same period.
Raghu Lal Karna, Information Officer at Birgunj Customs Office, said that 7,150 units of motorcycles worth Rs 944.8 million were imported in between mid-July and mid-August this year compared to 3,571 units worth Rs 467.7 million in the same period last year.
The current fiscal year, 2024/25, began on July 16.
On the contrary, only 76 jeeps and cars worth around Rs 144.4 million were brought to the country through the transit point in the period this year, down from 127 jeeps and cars worth Rs 206 million in the same period last fiscal year.
The revenue collection has also doubled in period with the Customs Office collecting Rs 884.4 million in the first month this year compared to Rs 442.1 million in the same period last year.
