S enior industrialist and Chairman of Vaidya’s Organisation of Industries and Trading Houses (VOITH), Vijay Gajananda Vaidya passed away on April 17. Suffering from brain tumour for a long time, Vaidya, 84, breathed his last at his Budhanilkantha residence.

Although he began his career at United States Agency for International Development (USAID), he turned an entrepreneur with just US $ 700 at the age of 29. He established VOITH and took it to unprecedented heights. Today, VOITH is among the most successful business enterprises in the country and employs 7,000 people.

In 1967, Vaidya established United Traders Syndicate which is the sole authorised distributor of Toyota vehicles and its spare parts for Nepal. He also served as the Honorary Consul General of the Philippines in Nepal.

VOITH has invested also in education and agribusinesses.

Vaidya is survived by wife, one daughter and two sons including Suraj Vaidya, the newly elected President of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI).
