Lawmakers on Sunday raised serious concerns over ongoing power outages and safety issues in the electricity sector, urging the government to take immediate action to ensure a stable electricity supply and protect workers.
Speaking at a session of the House of Representatives on Sunday, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Shiva Nepali said frequent fluctuations and outages had disrupted daily life. “Households across the country are experiencing frequent blackouts and unstable lighting. I request the government to clarify the cause and resolve the issue promptly,” he said.
Suryaman Tamang (Dong), a lawmaker from the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center), criticized the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for negligence that he said had resulted in preventable deaths of electricity workers.
“Load shedding had officially ended, yet now it has resurfaced. Are Nepalis once again being forced to live in darkness?” he asked, urging the Ministry of Energy and the NEA to restore a regular power supply.
Meanwhile, Saraj Ahmed Farooqui of the CPN-UML expressed concern over the recent rise in road accidents and called on the government to bring forward a concrete plan to curb such incidents.
Gyanendra Shahi, a lawmaker from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), drew attention to the recent death of Umesh Pariyar, who was electrocuted during an electricity installation in Kavrepalanchok. He urged the government to investigate the incident and improve workers’ safety in the energy sector.
Adding to the concern, Ranendra Barali of the Maoist Center called on the government to provide proper relief and compensation to the family of Umesh Pariyar, who was electrocuted during maintenance work a few days ago.
The lawmakers collectively stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and urgent intervention by the concerned ministries to address the ongoing issues in the electricity supply system and worker safety. -- RSS
