The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has hiked egg prices, effective Sunday, April 27.
Following a meeting on Saturday, the association decided to increase the farm gate prices of extra-large, large, and medium-sized eggs to Rs 450, Rs 430, and Rs 380 per crate, respectively, according to association president Binod Pokharel. Each crate contains 30 eggs.
The price of large sized eggs had previously dropped to as low as Rs 350 per crate after peaking at Rs 525 . The latest hike, Pokharel explained, is driven by a seasonal decline in production, with the onset of summer, and subsequent rise in demands.
“With production falling and demand increasing, it became necessary to adjust the prices,” Pokharel said.
Madan Pokharel, secretary of the association, indicated that prices could rise further if current trends continue.
According to the association, Nepal’s daily egg production currently stands at around three million units.
The price adjustment is expected to bring some relief to farmers, many of whom had been struggling to even cover their production costs in recent months, said the association.
