June 8: Nepal Telecom (NT) is planning to replace Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) service known as ‘landline’ with internet protocol (IP) technology. The company plans to install the new technology by the beginning of the upcoming fiscal year.
According to Prativa Baidhya, Spokesperson of NT, with an aim to improve and expand the existing service networks, the company will replace the older technology with new one.
Increasing the service quality, NT is replacing the Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) with IP based ‘IMS Core System’ and ‘Multi Service Exchange Network Equipment.’
“The IP based technology will be introduced to provide services such as IPTV and other value added services,” says Spokesperson Baidhya. She adds, “We aim to construct ‘future proof network’ with the project.”
Under the project, core equipments with one million line capacity will be installed. As per the company, 400 line capacity ‘excess network equipment’ will be installed to provide voice and ADSL internet service based on PSTN service to different parts of the country in the first phase.
NT also plans to expand broadband internet service using the ‘fiber to the home’ (FTTH) technology under the same project.
