March 9: Nepali Congress’ leader Ram Chandra Poudel has been elected as the third President of Nepal.
Poudel was elected as the head of the state by securing weighted 33,802 votes. He garnered votes of 214 federal and 352 provincial lawmakers.
Lawmakers from Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center, Janata Samajwadi Party, CPn-Unified Socialist, Rastriya Swotantra Party, Janamat Party, Nagarik Unmukti Party and Rastriya Janamorcha had voted for Poudel.
Another presidential Subash Chandra Nembang secured 15,518 weighted votes. Nembang had received votes of 96 federal and 162 provincial lawmakers.
A total of 831 lawmakers-313 federal and 518 provincial- had cast their votes in the presidential election.
Out of total 334 federal lawmakers, fourteen from Rastriya Prajatantra Party and one from Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party did not take part in the polls.
NC’s Chandra Bhandari and Maoist Center’s Barshaman Pun did not cast their votes as they are outside the country for treatment. Likewise, Corruption and murder-accused NC’s Tek Bahadur Gurung and UML’s Laxmi Mahato Koiri abstained from voting.
