Tea exports through the Mechi Customs Office increased by 55.7% year-on-year during the first six months of the current fiscal year.
Between mid-July 2024 and mid-January 2025, approximately 11,232 tonnes of tea worth nearly Rs 3 billion were exported, according to Information Officer Ganapati Kandel. This marks a sharp rise from Rs 1.9 billion in tea exports during the same period last year.
Aditya Parajuli, Chairman of the Tea Producers’ Association, attributed the growth to reduced tea production in India. “Exports could grow even more if the government provides additional support amid increasing demand in the Indian market,” Parajuli noted.
According to data from the Trade and Export Promotion centre, Nepal exported over 13,900 tonnes of tea worth Rs 3.62 billion in the fiscal year 2023/24.
The export of black cardamom saw a 16% year-on-year increase, totaling Rs 4.55 billion during the review period, the customs office reported.
Similarly, plywood exports grew by 27.9% year-on-year, reflecting a positive trend in demand.
While cement clinker exports also improved, several other products recorded declines. Exports of iron, chhurpi (dog chew), ginger, cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage fell during the period, according to the Mechi Customs Office.
