Former US President Donald Trump is reported to be safe following an apparent assassination attempt at his Florida golf course. According to the BBC, US authorities have confirmed that a "potential suspect" is in custody.
The UK-based international broadcaster reported that Secret Service agents spotted a barrel of a rifle poking through some bushes and opened fire at him. The FBI said Trump was 300-500 yards (275 to 455m) away at the time.
An AK47-style firearm and scope, along with two backpacks and a GoPro camera, were later found at the scene, BBC reported adding,
“A witness reported seeing the suspect running from some bushes and jumping into a black Nissan car after the agents had fired at him multiple times.”
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the apparent attempt on Trump's life came just two months after he was shot at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, sustaining a minor injury to his right ear.
Both incidents highlight the challenges of keeping presidential candidates safe in a hotly contested and polarized campaign with just over seven weeks to go before the November 5 election.
"I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes - It was certainly an interesting day!," Trump said on social media late on Sunday, thanking Secret Service and police for keeping him safe.
CNN, Fox News and The New York Times identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii, citing unidentified law enforcement officials.
BBC reported that the suspect was a pro-Ukrainian campaigner.
