Eleven tourists have died in Mustang since mid-April last year due to altitude sickness, according to the District Police Office. Among the deceased, nine were foreigners and two Nepali nationals, with ages ranging from 58 to 81 years.
Inspector Bishal Adhikari, Information Officer at the District Police Office, told state-owned news agency, RSS, that most of the deceased foreign nationals were from India, either visiting the Muktinath temple or trekking in the region.
Five fatalities occurred in Muktinath of Varagung Muktichhetra Rural Municipality-1, five in Jomsom of Gharpajhong Rural Municipality-4, and one in Thasang Rural Municipality-2, Adhikari added.
The deaths were recorded at different times of the year: two in Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May), one in Jestha (mid-May to mid-June), two in Asoj (mid-September to mid-October), five in Kartik (mid-October to mid-November), and one in Poush (mid-December to mid-January). Among the victims was a 63-year-old American citizen.
In the previous Nepali calendar year (mid-April 2023 to mid-April 2024), altitude sickness claimed the lives of 17 visitors, including 11 foreigners and six Nepalis, according to Adhikari.
