May 13: A total of 70 climbers summited Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, on Wednesday, the state-owned national news agency RSS reported citing the Department of Tourism.
Director of the Department of Tourism Mira Acharya, who is currently at the Everest Base Camp, informed that 70 climbers from various countries reached atop the 8,846.86 metres- mountain in a single day.
A 12-member rope-fixing team (also known as the Icefall Doctors) led by renowned Everest climber Kamirita Sherpa had reached the summit of Everest on the evening of May 7, opening the door of the summit to a total of 408 aspiring climbers who had obtained permission for this year’s spring season expedition.
Since then, a total of 182 climbers have set their feet on the top of Everest, RSS further reported.
The spring season is the most favourable season for climbing Everest and the window is open until the end of May.
Last year, mountain expedition was closed due to the emergence of coronavirus. But the expedition is underway this year despite a surge in second wave of Covid-19.
Mountaineering is one of the major source of income of the country and the people, especially the Sherpas, involved in this sector.
