Adverse weather conditions affected flight operations from Kathmandu to mountainous districts across the country on Monday, November 4, leaving a significant number of tourists stranded at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
Jagannath Niraula, TIA’s General Manager, said that flights could not be operated to Lukla Airport in Solukhumbu due to dense haze. “Flights to remote areas have been affected due to bad weather,” he added.
Amid poor visibility, domestic carriers headed for destinations in Tarai, flew under the instrument flight rules (IFR) from TIA. International flights also remained unaffected by the bad weather, according to the TIA Office.
Dr Binod Pokharel, Associate Professor at the Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology of Tribhuvan University, wrote on social media platform X that weak western disturbance brought precipitation and cooler weather in Nepal.
While some hilly areas of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces have been witnessing light rainfall along with thunder since early Monday morning, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has predicted chances of light rainfall in other parts of the country as well.
According to Shanti Kandel, senior meteorologist at the department, weather conditions will gradually improve from Tuesday onwards.
