Farmers in Rawabesi Rural Municipality of Khotang district have earned approximately Rs 9.5 million from lychee sales this season. The rural municipality in eastern Nepal reported a total production of 184 tonnes of lychees.
Ward No. 1, Kubhinde—renowned for its lychee orchards—recorded the highest yield at 88 tonnes. According to Uddhav Bastola, head of the rural municipality’s Agriculture Section, lychees grown across 11 hectares in Kubhinde have begun bearing fruit.
Production in other wards included 24 tonnes in Ward No. 2 Kharpa, 16 tonnes each in Ward No. 3 Lamidanda and Ward No. 4 Dharapani, 8 tonnes in Ward No. 5 Dubekol, and 32 tonnes in Ward No. 6 Haunchur.
Prem Bahadur Magar of Langhali Chowk in Kubhinde told the state-owned RSS news agency that he earned Rs 30,000 by selling lychees at Rs 1 per fruit. Khadga Prasad Regmi from the same area reported sales worth Rs 45,000. Some farmers earned over Rs 100,000, according to Kubhinde Ward Chair Gehendra Man Rai.
Rai estimated that total earnings from lychee sales across the municipality reached around Rs 9.5 million this season.
Rawabesi Rural Municipality has adopted a policy to develop the area as a lychee production hub. The initiative was included in the policies and programmes approved by the 17th village assembly on June 24, said Rural Municipality Chair Fatik Kumar Shrestha.
