Rara Lake, the largest water body in Nepal, known for its natural beauty, is facing growing encroachment due to an increase in vegetation around its shores.
Rara Lake, Nepal's largest water body, renowned for its natural beauty, is under threat due to increasing encroachment by vegetation upon its shores. This unchecked growth is disrupting the lake's pristine environment and jeopardizing its ecological balance.
Nanda Singh Rokaya, a teacher from Murma in Chhayanath Municipality, expressed concerns about the lake's deteriorating ecosystem. "The once-clear, radiant blue waters and fresh atmosphere are now overshadowed by overgrown plants. The lake's water was much clearer when I was young, but these days, it has started to smell," he remarked.
The Rara National Park Office recognizes the importance of addressing this issue but cites a lack of resources and budget as major obstacles. Despite these challenges, the office remains committed to preserving the lake's natural allure.
Senior Conservation Officer at the park, Mahesh Neupane, shared plans to initiate a cleanup campaign targeting the western part of the lake, including areas like Nijar. "The campaign is expected to be launch soon," he added.
Experts have urged authorities to adopt a strategic and sustainable approach to control the vegetation spread, clean the lake area, and safeguard the region's biodiversity. Such efforts are seen as crucial to maintaining the ecological integrity and timeless charm of Rara Lake. -- RSS
