Flooded Leuti River amid continuous rainfall since early Saturday morning has washed away a section of Dharan-Dhankuta Road along the Koshi Highway.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Tanka Thapa of the Mulghat Police Post confirmed that approximately 100 meters of the road at Phedigaun in Sagurigadhi Rural Municipality–6, Dhankuta, has been swept away by the floodwaters.
The disaster struck less than two days after the onset of the monsoon, which arrived 15 days earlier than the seasonal average this year, according to the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Typically expected around June 13, this year’s monsoon system entered the country via the eastern region late Thursday, May 29.
The damaged highway is a critical route connecting the eastern Tarai to the hill districts of Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, and Panchthar via the Koshi Highway and Tamor Corridor. Transportation along this route has come to a complete standstill.
“Coordination is ongoing with the Road Division Office in Dhankuta to assess the damage and begin restoration,” Thapa said.
The affected section lies at the base of the Chure hills, a region prone to frequent disruptions from floods and landslides during the monsoon season.
This year, the government has forecast an above-average monsoon, with rain-induced disasters expected to affect around two million people across the country.
