Insurance claims worth Rs 11.82 billion were made between September 26 and November 13 for damage caused by rain-induced disasters in the last week of September, according to Nepal Insurance Authority.
The 18 insurance companies received a total of 3,418 claims in the period. Of them, 16 companies have settled 902 claims totalling Rs 610.79 million, data from the authority show.

Floods and landslides triggered by the three-day incessant rain wrecked havoc across the country September-end, destroying lives and properties. Around 250 people were killed and many sustained injuries or went missing.
As districts in the central and eastern part of the country were hit the hardest, as many as 2,968 claims amounting to Rs 10.63 billion were made in Bagmati Province alone. It was followed by Koshi and Madhesh, with 251 and 101 insurance claims, respectively.

Of the 18 companies, Siddhartha Premier received 501 claims – the highest – amounting Rs 2.6 billion in the period. And, the company settled 105 claims worth Rs 93.73 million in the period, according to the authority.
The data show that nearly half of the claims amounting to Rs 8.75 billion were made for property damage and 304 claims totalling to Rs 2.43 billion for engineering and contractors’ risks.
Remaining claims were for damage to private and public vehicles, agricultural crops and livestock among others.
