Insurance claims worth Rs 9.54 billion were made between September 26 and October 22 this year for damage caused by rain-induced disasters in the last week of September, according to Nepal Insurance Authority.
The 18 insurance companies received a total of 3,306 claims in the period. Of them, 11 companies have settled 261 claims totalling Rs 303.65 million, including the advance payment, data from the authority show.

Floods and landslides triggered by the three-day incessant rain wrecked havoc across the country last month, destroying lives and properties. Around 250 people were killed and many sustained injuries or went missing.
As districts in the central and eastern part of the country were hit the hardest, a total of 2,910 claims amounting to Rs 8.92 billion (or 93.5 percent of the total) were made in Bagmati Province alone. It was followed by Koshi and Madhesh, with 228 and 94 insurance claims, respectively.

Of the 18 companies, Siddhartha Premier received 485 claims – the highest – amounting Rs 2.06 billion in the period. And, the company settled 33 claims worth Rs 41.78 million, according to the authority.
The data show that over half of the claims amounting to Rs 7.31 billion were made for property damage and 275 claims totalling to Rs 1.74 billion for engineering and contractors’ risks.
Other claims were for damage to private and public vehicles, agricultural crops and livestock among others.
