The mass death of honeybees in Jumla was caused by infections due to parasites and pesticides, and malnutrition, said Tirtha Kumar Shrestha, chief at Apiculture Development Centre, Godavari, Lalitpur during an interaction programme held in Jumla on Friday (September 13).
The interaction was held among the bee farmers and concerned bodies at the district, and a group of experts from the centre.
A team of experts from the centre recently conducted a study on the death of honeybees in the district.
The bees died due to the lack of honey in the upper part of the honeycomb, said Shreatha, suggesting farmers pay special attention to make honeycomb rich and nutritious.
Though the study found the managerial side of beekeeping satisfactory, malnutrition and use of pesticide in pasture caused the death of honeybees.
The sample of dead honey bees would be brought to the centre for further study. Moreover, it would be sent abroad, if required, to identify the additional causes, Shrestha added.
