Nearly 9,000 trekkers visited the Sagarmatha region, locally known as Khumbu region, in a month.
Data from the Sagarmatha National Park's office, Namche, show that a total of 8,902 visitors arrived in the region from mid-September to mid-October this year.
The Park collected over Rs 20 million in revenue from the entry fees, Bibek Shrestha, an official at the park’s office, told RSS, the state-owned news agency.
Nepali citizens have to pay Rs 100 in entry fee per person. While citizens from SAARC-member countries have to pay Rs 1500 per person to enter the park, visitors from other countries are charged Rs 3,000.
The Park had recorded only 125 trekkers entering the region between mid-July to mid-August and 1,331 from mid-August to mid-September. The footfalls during the period generated nearly Rs 3.6 million in revenue, added Shrestha.
“The arrival surged past month with the beginning of the tourist season,” said Shrestha.
The six month period from March to May and September to November is Nepal’s peak tourist season. On average, around 1,000 tourists enter the Park daily during the peak season.
Enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Park is spread across an area of 1,148 square kilometres with the elevation ranging from 1,800 metres to 8,848.86 metres.
