The Tamang community celebrated Sonam Lhosar, their New Year, on Thursday, January 30, ushering in the Year of the Serpent with enthusiasm and joy.
Following a 12-year cycle, each year represented by an animal, Sonam Lhosar falls on Magh Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight in the Nepali month of Magh. The festival is observed through ancestral and nature worship, along with reflection on Buddha’s teachings. Families and relatives gather to exchange wishes for prosperity and happiness.
Beyond the Tamang community, ethnic groups such as Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha also celebrate the festival in their unique ways.
In Kathmandu, community members in traditional attire participated in a rally from Ratnapark to Tudikhel, culminating in a special cultural program.
Here are some moments from the Sonam Lhosar celebrations, captured by our photojournalist, Sunil Sharma.
