Tremors were felt in and around the Kathmandu Valley early Wednesday morning following an earthquake in Tibet. According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck at 4:05 am with its epicenter in Dingze County, China—just 18 kilometers north of the Nepal border.
Nepal continues to experience seismic activity in several regions. Jajarkot district in western Nepal, in particular, has witnessed a series of recent earthquakes. On Tuesday at 4:53 am, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded in Paink, Kushe Rural Municipality. The day before, on Monday, a 4.1-magnitude quake also struck the same area at 9:31 pm. No reports of damage have been received so far.
Prior to that, two earthquakes of magnitudes 5.2 and 5.5 respectively were recorded in Paink on the evening of April 3, causing minor damage to some houses. Additionally, a magnitude 4.0 quake hit Darchula on April 2, while Humla experienced a 4.5-magnitude quake on March 25.
Nepal is highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its location along the active boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This zone, where the Indian plate is pushing northward beneath the Eurasian plate, has historically generated powerful earthquakes, including the devastating Gorkha earthquake of 2015. Most recently, a magnitude of 6.4 with its epicenter in Jajarkot on November 3, 2023, claimed 157 lives—105 in Jajarkot and 52 in Rukum West. -- With inputs from RSS
