Chandragiri Hills is More Than a Destination

Shyam Tandukar is the Acting General Manager at Chandragiri Hills Limited. Chandragiri Hills Limited is promoting Chandragiri hills as an integrated destination with a luxury resort, cable car and hosts of other activities. Ushak Karki of New Business Age talked to Tandukar on various aspects of Chandragiri Hills Limited and its future plans. Excerpts:

Can you share the story behind the inception and evolution of Chandragiri Hills?

Chandragiri Hills Limited, conceived as an integrated destination catering to all generations seeking an ideal getaway, was established to fill the void for a beautiful place in close proximity to the Kathmandu Valley. The journey began with the introduction of a cable car in collaboration with an international company. Over time, this project transformed into a multifaceted destination, featuring a high-end restaurant, an amusement park, and a heart-pounding zip line.

In addition to its recreational offerings, Chandragiri Hills holds cultural and spiritual significance thanks to the Bhaleshwar Mahadev Temple. Historically, these hills were where Prithivi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, first beheld the Kathmandu Valley. Enchanted by its beauty, Shah visited the Bhaleshwar Mahadev Temple, where he made a wish to conquer the valley.

What facilities does Chandragiri Hills offer?

Chandragiri Hills stands as a comprehensive destination, offering adventurous activities, luxurious accommodation, diverse cuisine, and cultural significance amidst majestic mountains. We are synonymous with the cable car. Visitors can elevate their adventure in the majestic hilltop, enjoying breathtaking views.

The resort features various room categories, including deluxe rooms, executive rooms, suite rooms, and presidential suites. Whether for an intimate dinner or a joyous group celebration, the dining spaces ensure an exceptional experience, allowing guests to savour culinary creations and exotic drinks against the backdrop of the Himalayas and lush surroundings.

Chandragiri Hills Resort is also renowned as the premier venue for destination weddings in Kathmandu. Additionally, it provides captivating meeting and event venues for corporate gatherings and inter-organisation events. The resort's conference hall is a perfect setting for business gatherings and professional events.

What was the impact of COVID-19 on Chandragiri Hills, and what measures have you taken to boost business post-pandemic?

Chandragiri Hills offered visitors a holistic experience prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. While the business was gaining momentum, the pandemic dealt a severe blow to the global tourism sector, impacting Chandragiri Hills as well. Undeterred, we responded with agility, launching various campaigns and offers. This strategic approach has led to a resurgence in both domestic and international tourist numbers, particularly an increase in Chinese and Indian visitors.

What challenges are you facing in the hospitality industry, specifically in terms of manpower?

Similar to other flourishing industries, the hospitality sector, including Chandragiri Hills, faces challenges in acquiring skilled and experienced manpower. The growing trend of youths heading abroad for employment opportunities have further exacerbated the shortage of skilled workforce.

How are you addressing the shortage of manpower and working towards retention?

To combat the recurring issue of manpower turnover, Chandragiri Hills has implemented an indigenous and proactive policy. We prioritise local community for different position, while senior and experienced team members take on the responsibility of training and mentoring fresh recruits. This creates a self-sustaining cycle of skill development, significantly reducing workforce turnover. The blend of experienced and trained employees with local talent has proven to be sustainable. This approach not only benefits the company but also the local community by providing jobs in the vicinity. The turnover rate among local recruits is notably lower compared to those recruited from outside the local community.

What are the future plans of Chandragiri Hills Limited?

We are committed to constant improvement. In pursuit of offering enhanced services, the company has ambitious plans, including the introduction of a skywalk, sky sighting experiences, and additional amusement activities. With a long-term vision, Chandragiri Hills aims to extend the cable car route up to the resort, enhancing logistical convenience for visitors. Despite growing competition in the hospitality sector, Chandragiri Hills remains unique. Unlike other destinations like Nagarkot, Chandragiri offers a diverse range of attractions—from a cable car and high-end resort to an amusement park and zipline, all under the ownership of Chandragiri Hills Limited.

With increasing competition in the hospitality sector, especially with the rise of high-end hotels in the Kathmandu Valley, what strategies are Chandragiri Hills adopting to survive and thrive?

Chandragiri Hills has to compete with itself. The company focuses on healthy competition and strives to provide the best services to customers. Offering various attractive packages, such as free cable rides on birthdays, and serving quality, delicious food at affordable prices, Chandragiri Hills maintains a unique position. Unrivalled service delivery, the breathtaking beauty of nature, and a commitment to customer care distinguish Chandragiri Hills from the competition. The availability of diverse offerings at a single destination on the outskirts of the federal capital places Chandragiri beyond the ring of competition. Nowhere else do visitors get to enjoy a panoramic view of nature coupled with the best services at affordable rates.

Why should someone visit Chandragiri Hills?

Chandragiri Hills promises a unique experience in close proximity to nature, serving as a one-stop destination. It aims to be not just one of the finest hotels in Nepal but a premier destination in South Asia. Chandragiri Hills offers a rare and unforgettable experience rarely found elsewhere in the region. It goes beyond being just a destination; it's a journey through nature, history, and self-exploration. For those seeking an escape, adventure, and a connection with majestic beauty, Chandragiri Hills is a must-visit destination, all within a few kilometres' distance from Kathmandu.
