Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that Nepal firmly believes carbon-emitting nations must compensate non-emitting countries. Leading the Nepali delegation at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Prime Minister Oli made this remark while delivering the keynote address at the Parliamentarians for Fossil Fuel Free event on Saturday.
Highlighting Nepal’s efforts to mitigate climate change through zero carbon emissions, he emphasized the need for compensation to communities affected by the impact of emissions from developed nations. He cited the melting snow in the Nepal Himalayas, including Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest), as an example.
PM Oli urged developed countries to increase funding for climate adaptation, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. "Our future is bright because we are investing in it," he added.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Oli met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters and discussed various aspects of Nepal-UN relations.
