Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Nepal, Barahtal in Tamankhola and the Bukipatan area of Dhorpatan have quietly emerged as coveted destinations for domestic tourists. These hidden gems, situated near the bustling Burtibang Bazar, offer a blend of tranquility and adventure that has captured the hearts of trekkers. Barahtal, with its serene lakes and stunning views, and the Bukipatan area, known for its natural beauty and trekking routes, are fast becoming the must-visit spots for those seeking an escape into nature’s embrace. Their pristine environments and unspoiled charm provide the perfect backdrop for adventure and relaxation.
Joklal Budha Magar, chairman of Tamankhola Rural Municipality, noted the growing fascination among the younger generation for trekking, particularly to destinations that span from low-lying areas to the high mountains. To accommodate this growing interest, the local government has prioritized building essential infrastructure in Barahtal.
"The culture of travel is increasing," said Magar. "As more youth from both villages and towns embrace trekking, the religious and tourist areas of Baglung are also receiving more attention," said Magar.
A decade ago, these tourist areas remained relatively unknown, but now, domestic tourists are flocking to these new destinations. In addition to traditional tourist sites like Dhorpatan Valley, Gaighat Waterfall, Baglung’s Kalika Temple, and Panchkok newer locations such as Bukipatan, Rigtal, Barahtal, Patihalne, and Teva have also started making headlines in recent years.
Barahtal, situated at an altitude of 2,600 meters, offers breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, making it a favored spot for nature enthusiasts.
"Barahtal is becoming a top choice for domestic tourists," said Magar. "With the stunning views of the high mountain ranges and the sight of rhododendron turning crimson in the winter, it's an attractive destination."
To enhance the area's appeal, over Rs 10 million has been invested in infrastructure development, including the construction of the Barah Temple, footpaths, and lake protection measures. As a result, Barahtal now attracts a steady stream of visitors, which was not the case before the infrastructure was in place.
Bukipatan, located in Nepal’s only hunting reserve in Dhorpatan, has also seen a surge in popularity. Positioned at an elevation of 3,000 to 4,500 meters, Bukipatan has become a favored trekking destination for those seeking adventure and natural beauty.
Local resident Shyam Pun Magar shared that more than 2,000 tourists visit Bukipatan each year between July and October. Tourists who once limited their trips to Dhorpatan Valley now extend their journeys to Bukipatan, captivated by the majestic view of snow-capped mountain ranges, high mountains, and the sight of thousands of grazing sheep tended by local shepherds.
Bivek Sharma, a tourist from Butwal, was mesmerized by Bukipatan's beauty. "After driving to Dhorpatan, we trekked for four hours to reach Bukipatan," Sharma explained. "The experience was incredible, with wildlife, birds, streams, and the sight of shepherds adding to the charm."
He suggested that informative signs should be placed along the trekking route to highlight the Bukipatan area’s unique features, and he emphasized the need for basic facilities like toilets and resting spots for trekkers.
As the local tourism industry in these regions grows, the importance of developing infrastructure and promoting these hidden treasures has never been greater. Barahtal and Bukipatan are set to become must-visit destinations for trekkers and nature lovers, showcasing Nepal’s diverse landscapes and rich culture. -- RSS
