The Kavrepalanchowk section of the BP Highway will remain closed to traffic for 12 hours each night—from 5 PM to 5 AM—for a month.
According to the District Administration Office, Kavrepalanchowk, vehicular movement will be restricted along the stretch from Kavrebhanjyang to Nepalthok, which borders Sindhuli. The decision aims to reduce the risk of monsoon-induced landslides and flooding, said Chief District Officer Umesh Kumar Dhakal.
The section has yet to be fully repaired after severe damage caused by floods and landslides in the last week of September 2024.
An earlier meeting of the inter-district coordination committee involving Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhuli, and Ramechhap had decided to close the highway from 6:30 PM to 5:00 AM , starting June 21.
In just the past week, the road section was blocked four times by landslides and floods.
The September 2024 disaster followed a three-day downpour, causing major damage to the highway—a key route linking the Kathmandu Valley with eastern Nepal. Thousands of vehicles use this road daily.
The stretch from Chaukidanda in Kavrepalanchowk to Barshekhola in Sindhuli was particularly affected, with an eight-kilometre portion swept away by the floodwaters.
Of the 160-km highway, 34 km from Khurkot to Nepalthok in Sindhuli, and 50 km from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchowk, were damaged at various points.
