Dismal Progress of National Pride Projects

May 14: The progress of major projects of the country has remained dismal even after the formation of a majority government.

The national pride projects were expected to gain momentum after the formation of  a stable government with two-thirds majority.  However, there hasn’t much progress as expected.

According to government data, a total of 18 big projects were allocated Rs 87.4 billion in the current fiscal year. But only Rs 30.2 billion has been spent as of mid-April this year.

A report published by the government shows that the projects have only spent 34 percent of the allocated budget in the current fiscal year.

The government had earlier formed an infrastructure development unit under the leadership of Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Shishir Kumar Dhungana, to monitor the progress of big projects. Despite the formation of the unit the projects have failed to progress adequately.

According to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Pokhara Regional International Airport which had received the lowest budget of Rs 6.8 billion in 2018/19 fiscal year had only spent Rs 100 million as of May 13.

Majority of these projects have failed to work as per the expectation.
