Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced Thailand's intent to increase investment and participation in Nepal's aviation and tourism sectors.
Speaking at a joint press conference following a meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is on an official visit to Thailand, Shinawatra stated that Thailand is keen to expand Thai Airways flights to Kathmandu and introduce direct flights to Lumbini.
The announcement comes as a relief to the Gautam Buddha International Airport, which is struggling for business two years after its inception.
Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, is a preferred pilgrimage site of Thai citizens who mostly follow Buddhism.
Shinawatra emphasized that Thailand’s investment and trade in Nepal would focus on the energy, hospitality, and aviation sectors.
Highlighting the significance of Oli’s visit—marking the first by a Nepali prime minister in 65 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties—Shinawatra said discussions also covered enhancing connectivity and trade partnerships between the two countries. – (With inputs from RSS)
